A Terrytown woman has been arrested on suspicion of embezzling nearly $84,000 from four businesses linked to local developer 's family empire, authorities said Thursday (Sept. New Orleans police said they booked Misty Romain, 34, with four felony theft counts, after being presented with both a signed confession and a video-recorded admission from the accountant that she manipulated payroll disbursements to overpay herself $83,711 between April 1 and Tuesday, when she was fired. Police said the confessions were elicited by Romain's supervisor Aaron Motwani, son of the businessman. Romain's arrest documents described Aaron Motwani as the 'accounting manager' supervising Romain's work for four family-owned businesses. The documents said Aaron Motwani detained Romain at a company office at 442 Canal St., until police arrived, when he presented them with her and what he said were the confessions.
According to the police report, Romain is accused of embezzling: • $22,601 from Magnolia Distributors, a business registered to Aaron Motwani and Tina Motwani Narra, at 422 Canal St. The address belongs to Jazz Gumbo, one of the Motwani family's tourist souvenir and T-shirt shops. • $21,575 from Golden Bourbon Inc. It was unclear with which business this company is affiliated, but it is owned by Aaron Motwani and Ayesha Motwani, and registered to a lawyer's office. • $20,921 from Willie's Chicken Shack, the fast-food restaurant at 630 Bourbon St. • $18,613 from Diamond Bourbon Inc., 409 Bourbon St., registered to Vice President Aaron K. Motwani and Secretary Jody Wagner.
