Art Cam Pro 2008 Crackle
I buy second hand vinyl quite often. Sometime you find some real bargains but sometimes the sound can be really bad. Some albums I would really like to listen to have a constant crackle all the way through despite cleaning the record in washing liquid and this record cleaning fluid I got from HMV. Would a better needle help? Its dust free but I've only picked dust off with my hands and don't know if there is a better way of cleaning a needle. Are there any other techniques I could try to get rid of the crackle? Or is the record just.fu**ed?
Cheers Jamie. Try a local radio/tv/hifi store for a stylus clening brush and fluid. Alternatively use a very fine soft artist paintbrush moistened with a drop of isopropyl alcohol. A pharmacy should sell you a small quantity. Brush very carefully from back to front of the cartridge once or twice; this should clean the stylus.
Once vinyl discs are badly damaged by scratches or ingrained dust there isn't a great deal you can do. Using tapwater can leave even worse deposits as it dries. Repeated playing of dirty discs can make things worse as the stylus grinds the existing dust particles in. There are amazing professional cleaning machines but forget those at over £1000. However careful wet cleaning can have some very good results But you must use properly designed brushes and fluid. I use a device called Disco-Antistat which is a pretty good wet cleaner around £45 If you get one of these, then take care pouring the fluid back into the bottle - it an easily run down the main tank and get a bit messy. Crackle as opposed to clicks can be down to the poor quality of the vinyl itself. Just try some Japanese pressings of records to see the difference. It can also be down to the type of stylus and cartridge you have as some emphasize crackle more than others. I remember a conversation I had with someone at Mantra Audio a few years back and he recommended a certain make (cant remember what it was) of cartidge that was better for playing older records for this reason. Assume there would be some trade off for top end response but its an option. I am sure it would not cure the crackle problem if it worked but may make it more tollerable! What TT/Arm/Cart do you have?
Something occurred to me that I'd read somwhere that a spherical (conical) stylus will often produce more acceptable sound than an elliptical stylus from worn records. I did a quick search and found this It's worth a read. So you might want to try a spherical stylus if you can find one for your cartridge. Alternatively you could consider getting an inexpensive cartridge with a spherical stylus like the £20 Goldring Elan or the £16 Audio Technica AT91 both at With worn LPs a slightly heavier tracking weight cartridge could be advisable - around 3-4 grams rather than the 1-2 grams that many recommend.
Hello there, Its somewhat disconcerting to learn there are still folks like me out there who still are fascinated by these obscure objects of desire (i.e. Ive been handling the things for some 35 years and still have trouble maintaining them. My advice is to simply not get involved. But if you insist here goes. Firstly, never put your fingers on the stylus to remove dust.
Tempting, I know. But this will only make matters worse. Always use a soft carbon filament brush with some fluid preferably isopropyl alcohol. Also make sure your vinyl is always stored upright. Laying it flat will increase the risk of warping and the vinyl (which is statically charged) will rotate in their covers and create nasty groove indentations.
Touhou Puppet Play Emerald Rom Download. Next, dont buy an OKKI NOKKI cleaning machine. Theyre noisy things and I heard of one blow up on its owner. The Loricraft is an even more pointless investment. They look like the real deal but believe me this is merely cosmetic. At less than half the price a Moth cleaner will do the same job (admittedly more noisily!).
A strong vacuum to suck off the fluid and dirt is all you need in principle. Try storing your LPs in anti-static poly-lined sleeves. The old hard card inners popular in the 70s & 80s invited scratches and I always get the vinyl away from such abrasive surfaces ASAP. If you have any ingrained scum you could use a small cosmetic face sponge (I use my wifes but youll have to get your own) soaked in a little warm water with fairy liquid.
Lastly, and this is often the depressing fact, pressings are a hit and miss affair. Even the Japanese produced some turkeys. Just be on your guard. Oh, and enjoy the really great sound of some LPs!. I recently bought a U.K.
First pressing Atomic Rooster album from 1970 which constantly crackled almost as loud as the music itself, it was like a rainstorm. I bought an Okki Nokki RCM, it took several attempts using L'Art du Son fluid and purified water dilution, but now it sounds fantastic.
Constant crackle in this case was probably caused by a mixture of debris, dust and moisture gathered up over the years rather than stylus damage. For me, the use of poly lined inners and tt mats creates static, I prefer good old fashioned plain paper inners and a naked platter.
Persevere - the sound is worth it in the end.
