So off to Volvo this morning to get the Security Patch applied to the XC and the MOST security switched off. Funnily enough, got the exact same issue, currently playing ping pong with Grom US support, mines a 2003 XC90 with Premium audio, got the mini disc and phone factory but wanted bluetooth. Not at the moment. Microsoft Office 2011 Equation Editor Mac. Depending on the spec of your car's audio system (Standard, High Performance or Premium), the V40's audio system consists of up to 4 main modules: Infortainment Control Module (ICM) - the main control unit, accepts inputs from the controls on the steering wheel and centre console. Also links to the LCD screen. Integrated Audio Module (IAM) - sits in the dash, has the optical drive, FM/AM tuner and MP3 decoder (and the hard disc and nav system, if you have that option) DAB Module (DABM) - behind the left trim panel in the boot, this is the DAB tuner and decoder.

Audio Module (AUD) - under the left seat, this is the DAC and amplifier module (and 5:1 processor on the Premium system). All the components are linked on an optical fibre bus called MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport), with the ICM as the controller. The MOST physical interface is common across a number of manufacturers (M-B, BMW, VAG, JLR, Volvo etc.) but the higher level protocols used over the interface that carry the control audio stream data are proprietary to each manufacturer.

A number of companies have worked on reverse engineering each manufacturer's protocols, most notably GROM Audio and mOBridge, to provide add-on or replacement components. Both GROM and mOBridge have reverse engineered the previous version of the Volvo MOST protocol that was used on the audio systems on models prior to the current V40 and S60. Their devices usually replace the boot-mounted CD changer and spoof it's functionality on the MOST network to provided Bluetooth and MP3/USB connectivity. However, Volvo run a security protocol over the MOST bus where the identity of each node on the bus is set in the ICM when the car is built. If you replace one of the nodes then the security protocol shuts the system down.

This was designed to prevent modules from stolen cars being used, but also means that if one of the components fails and you are out of warranty you have no option but go to the dealer for a replacement (at eye-watering cost). The security protocol can be turned off by downloading a software patch on a dealer's VIDA system, but getting this done can be a bit hit and miss as Volvo have told dealers not to let cars out of their workshops with the MOST Security protocol disabled. Also, unlike the older cars, the V40 has no 'spare' node on the MOST bus for any third-party accessory to replace. MOBridge currently have a MOST-based DAC solution for other cars and they have allegedly got it working to replace the AUD module on the V40. Check out Spruce Moose's thread on adding a subwoofer to the existing sound system he looked into getting a mOBridge DAC after the conventional add-on subwoofer system he fitted did not work as well as he wanted. There's a lot of information in there about how the standard system works. Replacing the AUD with a third-party DAC would also require the MOST Security protocol to be disabled, if you can persuade the dealer to do it.
